MTI Trend Study – Leadership in Transition 2026

Digitalization and AI, the shortage of skilled workers, and economic uncertainty are changing the demands placed on leadership. What skills will leaders need in the future—and what is preventing companies from developing them?

The 2026 MTI Trend Study, which surveyed 162 participants, shows that a willingness to embrace change, trust, and psychological safety, as well as coaching and communication skills, are becoming increasingly important. At the same time, time constraints, limited budgets, and a lack of support from management are making implementation more difficult.

69% cite a lack of time and pressure to be productive as obstacles. There are significant gaps between the skills that will be needed in the future and today’s development priorities. Therefore, there is a need for ongoing programs that can be integrated into the workday—such as coaching and digital learning paths.

The study is aimed at executives, HR and talent development professionals, and company management. It links the findings to concrete recommendations for making “ leadership development ” more effective and embedding sustainable leadership within the organization.
