Impetus for sustainability - the good side of corona?
Can we also take positive impulses on the topic of sustainability from the circumstances caused by corona? It has been widely reported that by traveling less and rapidly switching to digital events and meetings, companies not only save costs but also contribute to better sustainability. We took a closer look at the sustainability situation at MTI and what we have done.
More sustainability through Corona
MTI's green footprint has improved significantly due to coronavirus. In summer 2020, we still had concerns about whether we could survive the coronavirus crisis as a company.
MTI has been using the digital possibilities in PE and OE for some time now. With the restrictions imposed by the coronavirus crisis, we have taken a significant development step together with our customers.
Global training measures for Bosch Rexroth and Sartorius, for example, were completely converted to digital blended learning. The MTI Learning Management System now enables Learning 4.0 with a high degree of personal responsibility for the participants' learning success.
Overall, the switch to digital participant documents has also resulted in a significant reduction in the amount of paper used. The costs for printers and photocopiers have been reduced by 40%.
SUSTAINABILITY | MODEL CALCULATION PAPER SAVINGS
- We deliver around 2,000 workshops a year.
- If printed documents are provided for approx. 10 participants in each workshop, this means
2,000 x 10 x approx. 100 A4 sheets = 2,000,000 A4 sheets
à 5 gr. = 10,000,000 gr. or 10,000 kg
We save approx. 10 TONS OF PAPER with our LMS.
We were also able to reduce the number of copying systems from three to one.
SUSTAINABILITY | EFFECTS THROUGH ONLINE TRAININGS/MEETINGS
Thanks to the technical development of online meetings and online training, travel can be reduced by around 66%.
If we can realize 66% of training and meetings online in the future, that means
- 000 trainings/meetings X 66% = 1,320 trainings/meetings
- Trainer: 320 x 300 km on average = approx. 396,000 km
- Participant: 320 x approx. 10 participants x 100 km = approx. 1,320,000 km
- Together approx. 1,716,000 km
SUSTAINABILITY | EFFECTS THROUGH HOME OFFICE
Thanks to funding from the state of Lower Saxony, it was possible to invest in technical equipment for employees to work from home.
If the employees work from home 2-3 days a week, this means
23 employees travel 110 days (50%) less to the office 2,530 days x 20 km = approx. 50,600 km
A total of approx. 1,766,600 km are driven. x 150 gr. Co²
= approx. 265 tons of Co² reduction
Electricity is supplied by the company's own photovoltaic system, technical equipment is switched off at night and waste separation is already an integral part of the MTI sustainability concept.
The positive experience gained during the coronavirus crisis that MTI can make a contribution to sustainability has led MTI to set up a working group to further develop sustainability within the company.
The big challenge is to balance the different objectives when making decisions
We will publish the first MTI sustainability report at the end of 2021 and report on our experiences.
WE BRING YOUR STRATEGY TO LIFE
Sustainability has received a significant boost at MTI as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Less travel, digital training formats and working from home have not only reduced costs, but also noticeably improved the ecological footprint. Paper consumption and printing costs have been reduced, while CO² emissions have been cut significantly thanks to less commuting. Supplemented by photovoltaics, waste separation and switching off technical devices at night, sustainability is now firmly anchored in the company's day-to-day operations. The positive experiences have led MTI to set up its own working group to further develop and expand the topic in the long term.
