Coaching as a sustainable tool for employee and self-development
Agility and New Work, resilience and mindfulness, transformational leadership - the conditions of the new world of work are all pointing towards successful and healthy self-management and the better work results that come with it. Managers rely on professional coaching to master change and strengthen their own skills. This is because coaching can be a valuable instrument of personnel development that supports and promotes the professional development and efficiency of employees and managers in the long term.
Do you or your team members/employees need coaching at all?
It is important to determine in advance whether coaching is the right format for a given issue or not. Does a leader show leadership weaknesses in conflict situations with impulsive and stressed, even inappropriate reactions? Should employees and team colleagues be able to demonstrate and apply certain leadership skills for the next stage of their career? Then coaching is appropriate. If, on the other hand, knowledge is to be imparted and behaviors practiced, then webinars, seminars and similar training formats are more in demand.
When you opt for coaching, you enter into a dynamic process in which the coach supports you in improving and developing your self-management techniques. There are different forms of coaching, such as project coaching, self-management coaching, agile coaching, business coaching, etc. It is important to determine your needs in advance with the coaching specialist and then choose the right measure.

Self-management coaching for sustainable self-development
Coaching is always recommended if the need for the measure is formulated or determined by the leader or the coachee themselves.
When good steering skills are required,
- ...in conflicts with employees, team members, customers or business partners
- ...for large upcoming projects or change processes, particularly challenging management tasks
- ...for feelings of being overwhelmed, dissatisfaction and doubts about identity
- ...for particularly high levels of stress and exhaustion
then self-management coaching will help you to structure, activate, channel and automate your resources into healthy channels.
The coach draws on a broad repertoire of tools and methods that take into account the client's own motives, strengths and needs and applies them in a practical way to the individual needs and change process identified.
The coaching process should go through the following phases:
Initial and familiarization phase
General conditions, expectations, information and organization are clarified in preliminary talks and the situation is analyzed. Chemistry is also established and paves the way for successful collaboration.
Analysis phase and clarification of motivation
Clarifying the current situation and defining goals and wishes are important in this step. What should be changed? A detailed behavioral analysis helps to reflect on previous behavior and agree on the goals for change.
Change phase and implementation support
The defined goals and changes are consciously approached and implemented. This involves the use of practical and behavioral methods and models. Unforeseeable stumbling blocks may arise during the change process. Here the coach supports you with motivation, feedback, evaluation and reflection. External feedback from colleagues or family members also helps to evaluate progress and brings the goals up to date.
Final phase
Coach and coachee reflect together on whether the intended goals have been achieved and whether the joint interventions have improved the desired self-management skills or whether further coaching is required.
Transfer phase
In the transfer phase, the sustainability of the coaching is ensured and checked. Follow-up discussions and questionnaires after a few weeks/months are used to determine whether there is a need for improvement or whether the acquired skills are being implemented in everyday life intuitively and without any problems. Possible future risk situations are also reviewed in advance, played through and preventative strategies developed.
